Do you remember times spent with your family? Do you remember one specific present as the most wonderful gift in the entire world? Do you remember getting gifts that you know you would never want or use?
The holiday season inspires us to give. Giving is a great thing, but we all need to keep the Layon Landfill in mind while Christmas shopping. Some gifts may eventually be taking up space in the landfill. Other gifts can keep things out of the landfill.
Ring bells
This season try giving the gift of an experience rather than an object.For example, donate two hours of your time to spend with your child or family members ringing bells for The Salvation Army. Bell ringing is fun and gives you an experience to remember rather than a gift that may end up in the landfill. The Salvation Army provides many key services to our community and the bell-ringing drive is a large source of income for the organization's budget.
If you are not comfortable ringing bells, make a donation to the charity of your choice in the name of the individual. This is also a good option for those giving gifts to family members in the mainland.
Donating to a charity online doesn't require any postage or jet fuel to deliver the gift.
You also can choose from one of the many wonderful nonprofit groups that support our island community. The Salvation Army, Guam Animals In Need, Island Girl Power and Habitat for Humanity are all quality charities that rely on community support.
If your gift recipient is an animal lover, why not take some time on a weekend and volunteer at the Yigo Animal Shelter for Guam Animals in Need. If Yigo is a far drive, help your recipient arrange a fundraiser to support the nonprofit.
Christmas can be a wonderful time of giving and receiving. If we are hoping to have a sustainable community we need to look at the impact our of gift giving. Think about giving a lasting memory instead of a disposable landfill filler.
The impact of both gifts will last much longer than the holiday season.
