Passion: You can't spell compassion without it

"Three passions have governed my life:
The longings for love, the search for knowledge,
And unbearable pity for the suffering of humankind.
Love brings ecstasy and relieves loneliness.
In the union of love I have seen
In a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision
Of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge.
I have wished to understand the hearts of people.
I have wished to know why the stars shine.
Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens,
But always pity brought me back to earth;
Cries of pain reverberated in my heart
Of children in famine, of victims tortured
And of old people left helpless.
I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot,
And I too suffer.
This has been my life; I found it worth living."

G.A.I.N. Answers Your Questions

Please NEVER abandon a cat or door even it is a stray. Abandoned animals will die a slow, painful death. Please bring them to GAIN. We have an after-hours drop box, and charge NOTHING to receive an animal–that’s part of our job.

Here are some the most frequent questions we get:
•How long does G.A.I.N keep pets?
•How is G.A.I.N funded?
•Who do we call to pick up strays in our village?
•Who do we call to pick up dead animals on our streets?
•Who do we call if we witness animal cruelty?
•I can’t find my pet…what do I do?
•I found a pet…What do I do?
•What can I do about cats roaming around my neighborhood?
•Can G.A.I.N. help me find just the right pet for my family?
•How can I get a job in the Animal Care field?
•I Can’t Keep My Pet – What Can I Do?
•Are my donations tax-exempt?

*Always give generously. A small bird or rodent left on the bed tells them, I care.

*Climb your way to the top. That's why the drapes are there.

*Curiosity never killed anything except maybe a few hours.

*Find your place in the sun. Especially if it happens to be on that nice pile of warm, clean laundry.

*If you're not receiving enough attention, try knocking over several expensive antique lamps
.
*Life is hard, then you nap.

*Make your mark in the world. Or at least spray in each corner.

*Never sleep alone when you can sleep on someone's face.

*Variety is the spice of life. One day ignore people, the next day annoy them.

*When eating out, think nothing of sending back your meal twenty or thirty times.

*When in doubt, cop an attitude.

Ahoy there. It is Jessie your usually anonymous blog babe coming out of her shell to make a vast pronouncement seemingly dog and cat unrelated. World Cup mania has asserted itself with the help of a psychic squid. I am madly in love with Paul The Oracle Octopus. Have you been following his much ballyhooed...how to spell ballyhoo? Hmmm, Bally WHO? Have you been following his antics at the World Cup? ...uh no he is not in the stands with a vuvuzela. Paul is ensconced in an aquarium in Germany where he spends his days predicting the outcomes of various matches at the World Cup.

He is smooth and oh so
photogenic. Pauls charisma inspired me to do some digging and I discovered that there is a whole world devoted entirely to octopus psychology....(it is a fascinating study that includes a look at a touchy-feelie octopus named Leisure Suit Larry and a shy reclusive gal named after Emily Dickinson.) Comedy aside these creatures are a perfect example of astonishing yet wholly under-valued intelligence and sentience.

As for Paul it is hard to figure what is more hilarious....his status as a soothsaying cephalopod OR that so many humans are curiously camped outside of his aquarium frantically waiting to see what he will do next. Paul's World Cup predictions have so far been 100% accurate which is probably why Germany is flipping out over his latest pronouncement.

Chain Off update

Guam's inaugural CHAIN OFF took place this past weekend. It generated a lot of interest in alternative methods to guarding property and the humane treatment of outside dogs. Donations were generous and visitors were given Dogs Deserve Better flyers and door hangers to use in their neighborhoods.

Dogs Deserve Better in Pennsylvania has held "Chain Off" events since 2004. 2010 marks the first year for GAIN to participate.

Before the event ended a concerned resident brought in an emaciated pitbull mix with an embedded collar.

The dog, who we have named Cinnamon, was given food and water, then taken to a veterinarian for treatment. She will be placed in foster care while she recovers from heartworms.

Dogs on Guam do deserve better! Please will you help us reach our goal and make a contribution . No amount is too small, even a single dollar can make a difference. Our Dogs Deserve Better donation drive will continue through October.

Apollo

When Ashley, the wife of a U.S. serviceman stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, found an emaciated dog, she didn’t know what to do. Even though “Apollo,” a Labrador/pit bull mix, was starving, covered in cuts and suffering from heartworm, Ashley sensed that he was especially friendly and sweet.

She first called the local animal control agency, but when no one arrived within two-and-a-half hours, she ended up working with a local shelter to resolve the situation. The couple and their baby daughter arranged to become the suffering dog’s foster family, and they plan to adopt Apollo permanently. Meanwhile, American Humane provided a Second Chance Fund grant to the shelter so that Apollo’s medical care would be covered.

Apollo has gained a significant amount of weight and is responding well to his heartworm treatment. He truly loves his new family, and shows his gratitude every day with wags, hugs and kisses.

Chain Off Today (can you help us?)

If you've ever travelled around Guam, you have probably noticed many dogs tied to trees, fences, dog houses or other structures for the purpose of guarding the property. Most of these animals are tied 24/7 with no human interaction except for an occasional bowl of food and water.

Dogs Deserve Better in Pennsylvania has held "Chain Off" events since 2004. This is the first year for GAIN to participate.

Photobucket

On Saturday, July 3rd, at the Agana Shopping Center beteen 11 am - 3 pm, volunteers will be chained to raise awareness for chained dogs on Guam.

So, on Saturday, we are asking YOU to "put yourself in the dog's paws." Stop by and become "chained." Whether for a few minutes or a few hours, you will understand what it's like to live on a chain. GAIN will have volunteers soliciting donations to reduce the time you are "chained." Volunteers who remain chained for an hour will receive a Chain Off tee shirt.

Dogs on Guam do deserve better! Please will you help us reach our goal and make a contribution . No amount is too small, even a single dollar can make a difference. Our Dogs Deserve Better donation drive will continue through October.

See you Saturday!
